The motivation for this talk comes from a real need to have an open discussion about the challenges of control for very demanding systems, such as energy conversion systems and installations, requiring the so-called "sustainability" features. It represents the characteristic to tolerate possible malfunctions affecting the system and, simultaneously, the capability to continue working while maintaining power conversion efficiency. Sustainable control solutions have begun to stimulate research and development in various industrial communities, particularly for systems demanding high reliability and availability. The system should be able to maintain specified operable and committable conditions, and at the same time should avoid expensive maintenance works. A clear conflict exists for large installations between ensuring high availability and reducing costly maintenance.
